The Perfect White T-Shirt – from 3 Canadian Sustainable Brands

Her Simple Sole - The Perfect White T-Shirt - from 3 Sustainable Canadian brands

The search for the perfect white tee is typically a long one. I’ve definitely had my fair share that either didn’t fit well or didn’t last more than a few months. Crewneck and v-neck t-shirts are a part of my ongoing wardrobe essentials wishlist and having a white version of each will undoubtedly become timeless staples. This post is meant to help those who are still on their search, or to provide a detailed breakdown if you’re ever in the market for a quality white t-shirt. I can truly say, my search is finally over! These are my favourite ones from some of my favourite Canadian sustainable brands. From the fit, to the style, to the softness of each fabric – I love them all. Each has its own unique features and are different in many ways.

For reference, my current measurements are:
Bust – 32″
Waist – 25″
Hips – 35″
Height – 5’3″

Each t-shirt has been washed on a delicate cycle at least once and hung to dry. In each photo, I’m wearing the same undergarment underneath (a lightly padded bra with a nude bralette overtop) with the same pair of jeans (I’m wearing the Agolde Roxanne Super High Rise Skinny Jean). All pictures were taken around the same time, one after another.

Let’s get into the juicy details!

Frank and Oak The Good Cotton Essential T-Shirt

  • Colour – Bright White
  • Cost – $34.50 (CAD/USD)
  • Fit – crewneck, boxy, longer length
  • Materials – 100% organic cotton
  • Size worn – S

This was the first t-shirt I immediately fell in love with after trying it on. As you can see compared to the other two, the Essential T-shirt has more of a boxy fit. You can tell by the added pouf around my stomach area in the side profile photo. I personally love a boxy fit, especially when tucked into jeans or pants, as I find it drapes nicely with some structure. The sleeves are also more structured and slightly longer. It’s made of thick cotton, therefore being the least see-through out of the 3. Due to its fit, however, I’d prefer to wear it on its own rather than as a layering piece. If worn as the latter, the collar will bunch up and look a bit sloppy, and the sleeves require a bit of maneuvering.

  • Colour – White
  • Cost – $35 CAD, $30 USD
  • Fit – crewneck, regular
  • Materials – 100% Egyptian cotton
  • Size worn – S

The quintessential white tee! You all know Kotn is one of my favourite Canadian brands for basics. And it was about time I tried their Essential Crew – it’s got a ton of raving reviews. When I think of a timeless white t-shirt, this one fits the bill. It has a classic crewneck and a regular fit that isn’t tight or loose. Because of this, it also works well as a layering piece, tucks nicely, and lays flat against your body without restriction. The fabric is also buttery soft (echoing Kotn’s website description) and feels light as air on my skin. One thing to note is the bottom hemline after one wash (see photos above) – it’s a bit creased. This doesn’t bother me since I normally tuck in my t-shirts anyway.

Encircled The Fair V-Neck Tee

  • Colour – White
  • Cost – $44 CAD, $35 USD (or get a two pack of black + white for $79 CAD/$62 USD)
  • Fit – v-neck, regular
  • Materials – 70% rayon from bamboo and 30% organic cotton
  • Size worn – XS

This gem was kindly gifted to me by Encircled last September. I can attest to the comfort and craftmanship of the Fair V-Neck Tee. It has almost a lived-in feel, and to me it also has a romantic vibe – I can see it paired well with a beautiful floral midi skirt. I also love how the V ends at the perfect point so the risk of slippage is not an issue. It works well as a layering piece but like all v-necks, require a bit of adjusting so the collar isn’t lopsided. Unfortunately, the garment has slightly stretched since I made the mistake of hanging it to dry. Care instructions mention to lay flat to dry, which for some can be a nuisance. Also, it’s the least opaque out of the bunch, so an underlayer or neutral bra will always be necessary.
