Simple and Stylish Layering Tips for Winter

Now that we’re into February, winter’s just getting started for us folks up north. Coming up with unique layering options for winter has been a great way for me to be creative, stay warm, and make the best use out of my wardrobe items, even those normally meant for warmer weather. Think of it as creating a more season-less closet. Versatility is key!

Layering tip in the winter - fitted turtleneck tshirt underneath a jumpsuit

So it was only fitting that I share my favourite layering tips for this cold weather, all simple enough to recreate, perhaps even with items you already have in your closet. And as an added bonus, none of these tips should compromise style!

Here are 4 simple and stylish layering tips for winter:

Tip 1: Layer Under with a Fitted Turtleneck T-shirt

Wearing: Kotn turtleneck in Taupe (colour no longer available), Club Monaco jumpsuit (old, see similar style here), L’intervalle Dundee Nude Leather ankle boots

An easy way to layer is by wearing a fitted turtleneck t-shirt underneath a center piece, like a dress or jumpsuit. I love a comfortable, fitted turtleneck t-shirt – these ones from Canadian brand Kotn are my absolute favourite. Its fitted nature creates very little distraction underneath, while keeping your neck and arms warm. It’s also a great way to make use of your spring/summer pieces, or even occasion pieces (like I have here), during these winter months.

Tip 2: Layer Under with a Mockneck Tank Top

Wearing: Kotn mockneck tank, black camisole & green duster (both old from Dynamite Clothing), Levi’s Wedgie jeans (similar here), L’intervalle Maralik boots

Just recently, I realized how versatile a mockneck tank top can be, especially as a layering piece. Here I’ve taken advantage of a long-standing trend, layering a camisole over what would normally be a white tee or long sleeve top. Instead, I’ve layered one over a mockneck tank top, so another layer (the duster) can be worn. Added warmth without additional sleeves to worry about.

As another example, I implemented this type of layering in look #3 of my recent styling post with a cardigan and slip dress. If you don’t have a mockneck version, a simple high neck tank top should also do the trick!

Here’s another look using the same elements as above:

Tip 3: Layer Over with a Sweater Over Shoulders

Wearing: Kotn mockneck tank, black camisole & pink duster (both old from Dynamite Clothing), turtleneck sweater over shoulders (old), Levi’s Wedgie jeans (similar here), L’intervalle Maralik boots

Another one of my favourite ways to layer is by throwing a sweater over my shoulders. This way, you can make better use of your knitted sweaters in a more unconventional sense. It’s a stylish way to add one extra layer (like above), and adds interest to any basic outfit, expressing an “I tried” feel even on the most laziest days. Though considered more of a fall trend, as it’s not the most practical for winter (it won’t work underneath a coat), I still find it’s one of the best ways to keep warm while at home. Truly any sweater would work with this look!

Here are a few other examples:

Tip 4: Knee High Socks

The simplest tip of them all! Nothing groundbreaking here, and I wouldn’t classify a pair of knee high socks by itself as a stylish option. It’s more so an alternative to keep my legs warm, while I wear my most stylish clothes over top. I find if my legs & feet are warm, I’m just all around a warmer person! Items like wide leg crop pants, midi skirts, and even linen pants, can be easily dressed for winter this way. I prefer knee high socks over tights, mostly for comfort and ease.

Here are a few additional looks where I’m wearing knee high socks *in secret*…
