You all know I love my basic wardrobe staples. T-shirts and tank tops are my go-to’s when it comes to dressing for any season. The more classic the silhouette, the better, as these pieces form a great base for any outfit. Wear them as layering pieces in the cooler months, or on their own when it gets too hot to layer (or so you think!). And I want you to know that styling these pieces in the summer doesn’t have to be boring! Today I’m going through 4 simple tips to elevate basic wardrobe staples in the summer so getting dressed is a breeze, but still intentional.
Before diving into the tips, I think it’s important to consider what your basics are made of, especially for the summer. Opt for cotton and linen since they’re both lightweight and breathable. This helps you feel more regulated and comfortable, and when you’re comfortable in your clothes, you’ll feel more confident. This is why all of my summer wardrobe essentials are made from either of these two fabrics, or a blend that includes them.

4 Tips to Elevate Basic Wardrobe Staples
1. Style with Tailored or Dressier Items
Dress up your basics with tailored or dressier pieces that are appropriate for summer. These could include a pair of tailored shorts (love these ultra high-rise ones from Abercrombie) or a midi skirt (bonus if there’s added details like this one from Dynamite). Tailored or dressier items add a smarter contrast to a basic piece. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love a smart casual outfit?

2. Still Consider the 3rd Piece Rule
In my recent IG Reel, I discussed how the 3rd Piece Rule can be used to complete an outfit. It’s truly a styling tip that never fails and can still be thoughtfully incorporated into your summer looks. Consider lightweight layers like a thin knit sweater or a basic cotton long-sleeve top worn over the shoulders, or a linen button-up shirt worn over top and unbuttoned.

3. Play Around with Accessories
Playing around with things like jewelry, belts, and handbags can help elevate your basic pieces. They could even be considered your “3rd Piece” when added as a statement item. Things like a chunky necklace or a pair of gold hoop earrings, or even a high quality belt bag worn against your chest can instantly add more interest to an outfit.

4. Opt for Seamless Styles
If you’re still in need of a more elevated look with basics, consider seamless styles that certain brands have available. I love the Cotton Seamless Fabric Crew Tank Bodysuit from Abercrombie as a great alternative to a basic tank top. This style of clothing still provides a minimal look without visible seams, contributing to an outfit that is more elevated and clean.
