Why hello! How fitting is this post for the first day of fall? Not intentional at all… 😉 The fall style season is my absolute favourite. Cooler days mean having fun with layers and playing with earthy, neutral tones. And what better way to start off this season than to talk fall wardrobe essentials?
For the last 6 months or so, I’ve focused heavily on curating wardrobe essentials. My wishlist plays an important role to keep me in check and provide direction for where I want my wardrobe to grow. I truly believe with the right closet staples, getting dressed will always be simple and enjoyable. Not only that, but mixing and matching these pieces will always lead to a thoughtful + interesting outfit. Call me basic, but in the end it’s what I love.
Today’s post touches on all my current fall wardrobe essentials that I’m most excited to wear this year. Many of my items overall are mostly season-less, thus resulting in so many that can be worn over several months out of the year. But these are ones that have me feeling the most giddy to wear these next few months. And while I’m at it, I’ll let you in on a few items I’m eyeing on my wishlist for the fall season. Lots of pictures coming up – so get ready!

1. Trench Coats
Outfit details:
Trench coat – Everlane (sold out, linked to similar) | Sweater – Everlane (linked to a very similar shade; also see here for similar) | Pants – Encircled | Mules – L’intervalle | Bag – A.P.C. | Necklace (chain) – Sheena Marshall Jewelry (gifted) | Other necklace is very old – very similar one here
Trench coats for fall? Groundbreaking, I know. But I have to start off with the newest addition to my wardrobe. Something I’ve been yearning for for a few years now – a camel trench coat. This is the Modern Trench from Everlane that I managed to score mid-August as a pre-order item. It looks like it’s now either sold out or discontinued, unfortunately. I know it’s been in production for a few years now. I’d say I got pretty lucky! It has a pretty relaxed (maybe even oversized) silhouette. No specific bells or whistles – just a simple, minimal aesthetic I was looking for. Already in my wardrobe is a black drapey trench coat (pictured below) that has always been a classic piece for me. I’ve had it for years and I’m so excited to style it as an easy transitional piece from early fall and onwards.
2. Boots
Outfit details:
Trench coat – Line and Dot (old, similar) | Cardigan – Marks and Spencer (from last year, similar) | Tank top – Aritzia | Trousers – Aritzia (sold out, similar here and here) | Combat Boots – L’intervalle | Bag – A.P.C.
I was SO excited to take out my combat boots from storage in the last week or so. Not only are they my comfiest pair, but I love that they add a bit of edge to an outfit. And say goodbye to cold feet and ankles! As someone who gets cold very easily, this is an absolute plus. I can’t wait to also wear my dressier boots – in nude (worn most recently here) as well as in black (styled last spring here). Both are from L’intervalle, which seems to be my favourite footwear destination as of late. A pair of ankle boots can easily add a bit of chic-ness to any outfit, IMO.
On my wishlist this year is a brown pair of boots – I’m not sure which shade yet. I love the ones worn by Emma Hill, but I’m also drawn to this chestnut brown pair from L’intervalle.
3. Chunky Cardigans
Outfit details:
Cardigan – Tradlands (gifted, unsponsored review here) | Jumpsuit – old fast fashion | Mules – Maguire Boutique | Bag – Harly Jae
No surprise here, really. At the top of my wardrobe essentials will always be a quality chunky cardigan. I’ve managed to curate a pretty good collection so far (see photos above and below). They’re some of the most versatile pieces in my closet. Wear one over your shoulders, buttoned-up, or open with a layer underneath. The possibilities are endless! Cardigans are what work best for my lifestyle, especially since I’m now working from home indefinitely. They’re pieces that will take me from desk to dinner after a long day. And I love that one can be worn on its own on a milder fall day, or as a warm layering piece when it really starts to cool down.
I’d love to add a black duster-style cardigan to my wardrobe, though I haven’t quite found the right one. Feel free to let me know your favourites, if you have one!
Outfit details:
Cardigan – Paper Label (see it styled here last season 3 ways) | T-shirt – Kotn | Jeans – Levi’s Wedgie Straight (linked similar) | Mules – Maguire Boutique | Bag – A.P.C. | Necklace – Cuchara (no longer available, check out the rest of the collection here)

4. Lightweight Sweaters
Outfit details:
Sweater – Aritzia (no longer available, similar) | Jeans – Denim Forum (Aritzia) | Mules – Maguire Boutique | Neckace – Sheena Marshall Jewelry (gifted)
Another item that works well on its own, or as a layering piece once it really cools down. I have a small but mighty collection, consisting of a merino wool sweater (above) and a cashmere crewneck sweater (below). Both purchased on sale as they can normally be quite pricey at full price. I try to focus on natural fibers when adding to my wardrobe – these are truly some of the softest tops I own!
I’m absolutely obsessing over the Everlane Cashmere Polo. I’m embarrassed to say it’s been in my cart more times than one. But since it’s such an investment piece, I’m giving myself a bit more time to (re)consider it… highly unlikely though!

5. Pants
Outfit details:
Cardigan – Marks and Spencer (from last year, similar) | Top – Frank and Oak (no longer available, similar) | Pants – Encircled | Shoes – Nike
Last but certainly not least, I have to give credit to my small pants collection. Especially the wide leg pants (above) that literally feel like sweatpants. And you’ve seen me style my black trousers all. the. time. I’ve really grown to love a good pair of pants. They’re perfect for a work-from-home setting for full comfort. And of course, they’re reliable in dressing up an outfit when needed. Versatility at its finest. I’ve been eyeing a neutral pair of trousers that I plan to add this season, like these in grey.
That rounds up my list of fall wardrobe essentials I’m most excited to wear. Happy fall styling, friends! Let me know what wardrobe essential you’re most excited to style this season!
