Well well, here we are, talking about this season’s hottest wardrobe item – the slip dress. My last slip dress purchase pretty much sparked a bit of an obsession, so in the last few months I ended up getting a couple more. Unlike a body con dress, a slip dress shapes to your figure yet hangs pretty loosely, hiding whatever may have formed from possibly eating too many summer treats…
Here, I wore not just any slip dress, but a satin slip dress. Giving a bit of a lingerie feel that a lot of us wouldn’t dare wear out in public. But, regardless of the style, shape, and color of your satin slip dress, there are multiple ways of styling it, providing that just-rolled-out-of-bed-but-still-put-together feel. It’s really all in the basics: the dress itself, the layers, and the accessories. It’s such a great piece that could transition so easily into the Fall.
Read on for details on how I styled this look:
1. The Dress
Bold and feminine are key words here. And of course, detail. I went with a bold yellow with some lace detail, adding a feminine touch. I mentioned in a previous post where I styled a yellow dress, that yellow really wasn’t my color. But for some reason I’ve recently been drawn to this hue as it really makes a true statement. I’m definitely a neutral kind of girl, but still encourage pops of color!
2. The Layer
Depending on the weather (or your mood), you can either layer under or over your slip dress. If you haven’t seen or read about that certain 90’s trend that made a comeback – you know, the t-shirt styled under a slip dress thing, then you must live under a rock. I can’t wait to style this dress with a black turtleneck once the weather starts dipping into the lower 10’s (sad face). Here, I decided to keep warm and tone down the look by throwing on a denim jacket – an over-sized one that I
stole borrowed from Henry, might I add (I’m kinda in love with it!). Once again for me, casual comfort is the way to go. AND, this just goes to show that women can rock a man’s denim jacket no problem. 😉
3. The Accessories
And of course, styling with accessories. I’ve really been into the whole “bra chain” look, so I decided to get one for myself. Something a little different than a usual necklace. I feel this pairs really well with a slip dress since its quite visible underneath. And finally, grab your best sunnies, black purse & booties, and you’re ready for a fashionable night out.
Check out how one of my ultimate fashion icons, Aimee Song (@songofstyle) styled her glamorous #NYFW Michelle Mason yellow slip dress in her newest vlog (fast forward to 4:55). I think I need a green coat and a pair of green stilettos, pronto. She’s just too good at coordinating colors!
Have a fab rest of the week, and thank you so much for reading! How would you style a bold satin slip dress?
